Undesirable pet behavior is almost always solvable. We start with a medical workup, then build a plan that brings peace back to your home.

Destructive chewing. House soiling. Non-stop barking. Cats spraying. Excessive licking or scratching. Aggression that seems to come out of nowhere. Behavior issues are exhausting, and they’re the single biggest reason pets end up surrendered or rehomed. You don’t have to settle for it, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.
What Is Behavior Management?
Behavior management is a medical-first approach to correcting negative or destructive behaviors. We combine a thorough physical exam, targeted diagnostics when needed, environment and training guidance, and (when appropriate) medication, so the plan addresses the real cause instead of masking the symptom.
Why Is Behavior Management Important?
Medical Causes Come First: A lot of “bad behavior” is actually pain, thyroid disease, a urinary issue, chronic skin irritation, or cognitive decline. We rule those out before calling anything behavioral.
Tailored to Your Pet: Dogs, cats, and exotic species each have very different drivers, so our plan accounts for species, age, household, and what you’ve already tried.
Keeps Pets in Their Homes: Behavior issues are the #1 reason pets are relinquished. Getting ahead of them keeps your family whole.
Medication When It Helps: From short-term anti-anxiety meds to long-term behavioral support, we prescribe thoughtfully and monitor progress together.
What to Expect at a Behavior Consultation
Before Your Visit
Jot down a short history of the behavior (when it started, what triggers it, what you’ve tried), plus a current food and medication list. If possible, shoot a quick phone video of the behavior; it tells us more than any description can.
During the Appointment
History & Behavior Assessment: An extended conversation about the behavior, its context, and what has and hasn’t worked. These are longer than a standard visit by design.
Physical Exam & Diagnostics: A full hands-on exam, with bloodwork, urinalysis, or imaging if we suspect a medical driver. This is where most “mystery” cases actually get solved.
Plan & Next Steps: A written, individualized plan covering environment changes, behavior modification, training referrals when warranted, and medication if it fits the case.
Follow-Up and Aftercare
Behavior work is iterative. We schedule follow-up visits or phone check-ins to refine the plan, adjust medication, and track progress. For complex cases we coordinate with certified veterinary behaviorists.
When Should You Bring Your Pet In for Behavior?
Earlier is always easier. The longer a behavior runs, the more rehearsed it becomes. As a general guide:
- Puppies & kittens: Early socialization counseling is the highest-value behavior work we do. It prevents the issues adult pets end up in our exam room for, and we fold it into every puppy and kitten wellness visit.
- Adult pets: As soon as a new behavior starts, or an existing one escalates. Aggression, sudden house soiling, destructive chewing, and separation anxiety all respond best when caught early.
- Senior pets: Watch for new nighttime vocalizing, accidents in the house, pacing, or confusion. These often point to cognitive decline or underlying pain that’s easier to address when we catch it early.
Between visits, call us anytime something changes. A quick conversation often heads off a larger problem.
